The Instituteof International Relations of
Kyiv Taras ShevchenkoUniversity is the leading
centreof training specialists in international
relations and foreignpolicyof Ukraine. Currently,
the Institutegives training tomore than2,500
students, post-graduate students and trainees.
About 250of them are foreigners fromover 50
nations of theworld;more than300 students are
trained toget a seconddegree.
The Institutewas founded inOctober
1944. The foundationof this department at
theUniversitywas necessitatedbyUkraine’s
emergenceon the international arena, and
Ukraine’s role inWorldWar II, and the shaping
of thepost-war systemof international relations
under the auspices of theUnitedNations.
Initially, itwas the Facultyof International
Relations. Through the first decade it trained
300 specialists in international relations. They
madeup thebackboneof theUkrainian
diplomatic corps, createdUkrainian schools of
thought in the fieldof international relations and
international law.
KyivUniversitywas the first inUkraine to
open thePre-Higher Educational Faculty to
train foreign citizens, which tookplace in1960.
In the courseof time thedepartment became
a structural unit of the Institute andhas given
training tomore than15,000 students from
many countries of theworldprior to their further
studies.
The Facultyof International Relations, which
laterwas transformed in the Institute, has trained
over 10,000 specialists, bothUkrainian citizens
andnationals ofmore than90 countries of the
world, including Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,
Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, andYemen.
The Institutegraduatesmakeup thebulk of
the apparatus at theMinistry for ForeignAffairs
of Ukraine, work for otherMinistries, Agencies
andother Ukrainianorganisations activeon the
international arena.
The Institute takes pride in its numerous
graduateswho are citizens of foreign countries,
whosenumber is over 6 thousand. Manyof them
areoutstanding statesmen, influential politicians,
CEOs ofmajor businesses andorganizations,
famous scholars. They are, inter alia, President
of GeorgiaMichael Saakashvili, President of
the Senateof NigeriaAdolphusWabara, Vice-
President of theNational Assemblyof the

When at the Institute, the students gain
deep knowledge in the fieldof international
relations and foreignpolicy, diplomatic service,
international law, international economic
relations, international business, international
information, country studies,master several
foreign languages, get skills in scientific research
andpractice indispensable in international
political and foreigneconomic relations. Post-
graduate anddoctoral training is offered to
ensure academic and researchgrowthof the
graduates.
Twohundredhighlyqualifiedmembers
of the teaching staff, professors and associate
professors, train the students. Of them25
areDoctors, Professors, and80morehave
Ph.D. degrees (Candidateof Sciences) and are
AssociateProfessors. There are11 specialized
chairs and theChair of Foreign Languages
serving theneeds of theentire Institute.
Besides, well-knownUkrainian and foreign
researchers, educators andpractitioners from
other departments of theUniversity, other
research andhigher educational institutions
deliver lectures, teachpractical courses, supervise
